At-Home Emergency Treatments

These treatments are only meant as temporary measures, until you are able to visit the dentist at the next available opportunity.

A Tooth is Knocked Out

Rinse the tooth with water and push it back into its socket; visit your dentist immediately.

A Tooth is Broken or Chipped

If the tooth is sharp on your tongue, smooth its edges slightly with a fingernail file; alternatively, use orthodontic wax, which is available at drugstores, to cover the jagged edges.

Bleeding Gums

Use warm salt water as a rinse, then brush and floss your teeth.

A Filling is Lost

Use orthodontic wax, available from drugstores, as a temporary replacement in the gap from which the filling was lost.

Tooth Sensitivity (to cold liquids)

Check your toothpaste: avoid those that focus on tartar control, bleaching, or whitening. Try Sensodyne toothpaste and a daily fluoride rinse.

Crown Falls Out, or Temporary Crown Falls Out.

Place vaseline petroleum jelly inside the crown and seat the crown back onto the tooth.

Food Morsel Caught Between Teeth

Tie a knot in the floss and then try running the floss back and forth until the piece of food is dislodged.
